A lot of people found this too restrictive. Manypro-democracy advocates were extremely upset when theorganization dropped Nelson Mandela (at the time a black SouthAfrican anti-apartheid activist in jail on trumped-up murdercharges) from its list of adopted prisoners, because of hisendorsing a violent struggle against apartheid. Others wereupset that Amnesty would not criticize any form of government, even one which (like Soviet-style Communism, or Franco-stylefascism) appeared inherently abusive and incompatible withrespect for basic human rights. Many activists simply felt thathuman rights could be better served by a broader field ofaction.
